Single Hung VS Double Hung Windows
Which Window is Best Suited for You?
If you think it is time to replace the windows in your home, it is important to weigh out the pros and cons of the different kinds of windows to determine which is the best fit for your home. At AM Window and Door Solutions we offer both single hung and double hung windows. While they look very similar, both windows have unique features which make them different in many ways.
Single Hung Windows
Single hung windows are designed with a bottom sash which is operable and a permanently fixed top sash. These windows are more common in modern homes due to the cost. Single hung windows are easier to install due to how lightweight they are and they have less moving parts, which is typically why they cost less. Single hung windows can be refined with a design feature to help make the window stand out, for example adding a rounded top to the window. Likewise, there are many options for different finishes, shapes, trims and styles to add to the single hung window.
Single hung windows are typically more difficult to clean from the inside of the house. Unlike double hung windows, they only have one operable sash that opens. Therefore, in order to clean the outside of the window you must access it from the outside of the house. Additionally, these windows have limited ventilation. This occurs because only the lower sash opens up. This can cause problems such as higher moisture levels, and poor relief from humidity. Single hung windows typically have a slightly better Energy Rating then the double hung windows due to the fixed sash.
Double Hung Windows
Double hung windows are designed with a bottom and top sash which are both operable and open. Due to this feature, these windows provide the highest circulation when both sashes are opened. When both the top and bottom sash are opened, cold air will be able to pass through the bottom sash into your home while warm air can flow out of your home through the top sash. Double hung windows tend to have a more expensive one time payment than single hung windows. These windows are known as extremely functional windows and can be customized to fit anywhere in your home.
Most double hung windows come with tilt sashes, which means the top and bottom sash can tilt inwards. This feature allows for easier cleaning of the windows. Since the sashes can tilt inwards, the exterior and interior glass of the window can be cleaned from the inside of your home. Double hung windows are a much more common style of window today. These windows are the best suited style for varying climate areas due to the excellent ventilation of them. The long-term benefits of these windows, including little maintenance and good venitalation, will keep you satisfied for years.
At AM Window and Door Solutions our single hung and double hung windows are both known for having great Energy Star and NAFS-11 ratings.
